What’s this NLP Thing I’ve Heard Hypnotists Talk About?

NLP swaps "bad" habits for "good"NLP is all about therapeutic procedures that replace specific behaviors supporting unwanted outcomes to ones supporting your desired outcomes.

NLP focuses on human behavior, human thought, interpersonal communication and how patterns of thought and behavior impact one another.

NLP is the acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

If you’re a Tony Robbins fan then the term and techniques will probably be familiar to you as he uses them extensively in his programs.

However, NLP is not just for the motivational evangelist crowd but has real use in therapeutic hypnosis as you’ll discover in this primer.

It’s a psychological therapy that takes a close look at the way in which people experience life and how they react and relate to their circumstances. NLP asks the question – what is human interaction and communication all about? Why do we do the things we do? Why do we say the things we do?

Swapping Out Your “Bad Programs“:

Consider your mind as a computer that runs hundreds of thousands of programs each day automatically for you.

These can range from “making a cup of coffee” to “driving your car to work.” These actions are performed by running a little computer program in your head. Your head is replaying the same program it ran yesterday, and the day before, right back to when you first coded it into your mind.

But a few of these programs have gone “bad” or need “upgrading.” You need to replace them with a different program.

NLP provides techniques to swap out a broken program giving you unwanted results, with a new one that supports your desired outcome.

NLP taps into our understanding of how we create and maintain our inner thoughts and feelings. For example in smokers their inner thoughts are supporting the continuance of a harmful habit. The subconscious mind is protecting the smoker by ensuring the habit continues. You see the unconscious mind does know the difference between a bad habit and a good habit.

It essentially thinks all habits are to be continued and protected because if it didn’t you’d stop breathing at night – not good for your life support system!

Back to our smoking example – NLP techniques train the brain it no longer needs to protect the smoker against this habit. On a wider-front NLP can be used to change limiting attitudes, and create new and empowering ones.

Hypnosis and NLP – A Team Effort:

NLP methods are not dependent on hypnosis, so you can use them anytime.

The beauty of this is, it’s just not convenient to go into hypnosis at anytime of the day to deal with a situation. But NLP techniques don’t have this limitation and you can use what you’ll learn even in the middle of the most intense and demanding situation.

However, because hypnosis creates a state of high suggestibility, your subconscious accepts the NLP-induced suggestions more readily. And so the greatest power for you comes when they’re combined.

Hypnosis and NLP work together and help to promote life growth and language development. This is because hypnosis pushes past surface thoughts, feelings and motivating factors and gets down to the core of where your habits are stored – your subconscious mind – this is where all your little computer programs are stored and run.

The Language of NLP:

NLP focuses in on how language affects the neurological processes taking place in the brain. NLP makes use of special commands and post hypnotic suggestions to turn the tables on a bad habit and make it positive and empowering in the patient’s life.

Language, both in the written form as well as verbal, is a universal form of communication which is why NLP works well in removing undesirable behaviors and replacing them with desirable ones.

Words have intensity and strength to them. Wars have been started and finished through the mere use of words.

Hypnotic suggestions when paired with carefully selected words and sentences can help finish the “internal wars” in your subconscious mind.

It’s a very simple way of improving your life. First hypnosis peers into the hidden confines of your subconscious mind to discover what motivates you to perform a negative behavior in your life. Then NLP takes language and uses it to modify how you think about things and exchange thoughts that are harming you with thoughts to move you in the direction you want. Negative words turn into positive words in a manner that leaves you feeling more empowered, satisfied and contented in your life.
