Smoking is just one habit affecting health

If someone were to ask you the question, “Do my lifestyle habits affect my health?” would you know what to say to them?

If your answer would be, “Yes, they do very much” then you’d be completely correct. Many of the major causes of death such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease, stroke and even some injuries can be prevented to a certain extent by how you choose to live your life.

If you make healthy lifestyle choices over unhealthy ones then you’ll improve your chances of living longer and living healthier. In this two-part series we’ll take a closer look at this topic.

If you smoke or chew tobacco then toss these habits out the window pronto !

On an annual basis in the United States 440,000 deaths occur as a result of this bad habit. There are also a variety of preventable medical conditions such as emphysema, heart disease and mouth, throat and lung cancer that are brought about by the use of tobacco.

For those who enjoy alcohol limit the amount that you consume. You do not have to give it up all together but be conscientious of how much you drink. A man should drink no more than two drinks per day and a woman no more than one. One drink would be equal to a can of beer (12 ounces), a four ounce glass of wine or one ounce of hard liquor.

Consuming high quantities of alcohol can damage your liver and it can lead to the development of some cancers. Examples of these include liver cancer, stomach cancer and throat cancer. Alcohol is also often a contributing factor in car accidents (both fatal and otherwise), as well as accidents, murders and suicides.

Eat as nutritiously as possible. Not only will you feel better you will also look better and living this way will promote more energy and a greater zest for life! A healthy daily diet offers plenty of health benefits. When you make the right food choices you lower your chances of developing cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and damage to the arteries. You can also lower your levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol this way and lose weight.

There are many health conditions that are connected to what you eat.

If you need to lose weight, even if it is only a few pounds then take the appropriate action to do so. Even dropping 10 pounds can improve your level of health and promote longevity. Weighing too much increases your risk of a great number of serious health problems. Some examples of these include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol and cancer. Being too heavy can also lead to arthritis on the weight-bearing joints such as the spine, hips and knees.

Exercising regularly can help you to shed extra pounds as can eating a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber.

I’ll talk about more habits that affect your health in part two next post.
