First and foremost you have to believe deep down you can do this. Believe you have the power to give up smoking and to make it stick.
If you need some inspiration then think back to other times in your life when you did things you were not sure you could do – but you managed to do them, right?
Use the past as a tool to help you move forward in your life. You’re a quitter – in the best sense of the word – when it comes to smoking.
Feel good about your decision and don’t question it. Put your plan in motion and be ready, set, go!
You might have heard this one before and think it is a bit corny and time consuming but it works…
Sit down and write a list of all the reasons you’ve decided it’s time for you to quit smoking. Those reasons can be big or small, long term or short term. No one else is going to see this list so you can be completely honest with whatever it is you write. This list is for your eyes only.
Once you’ve written down your reasons keep it with you and read it every day. You might even want to make copies of your list and put it in different places. Tape it on your refrigerator and your bathroom mirror. Keep the list in your car and a copy in your wallet or purse.
Discuss your plan to quit with your physician. Doctors can help to give you the push ahead you need. They can also be very supportive and encouraging and may be able to provide you with some pamphlets to read to help you on the new path you’re about to embark upon.
As you prepare for the day you’ll quit wean yourself off of cigarettes gradually. In other words, cut back a little every week or if you prefer cut back a little on a daily basis. First start with one less cigarette and then two and then three and so on. Another tactic you might want to try in line with this is to switch to a brand of cigarettes you don’t enjoy as much.
Set a date to quit smoking. Mark the date on your calendar and prepare for it in every way possible. Prepare yourself mentally as well as physically. You may even wish to plan a little something on the date, such as a preparatory celebration.
Everyone needs a little help in giving up the smoking habit. The longer you have smoked the more help you will need. Don’t be afraid to ask for it if you need it!
